Rowan stood there at the truck. He would stand there for as long as it took to make Tara see the light. No one deserved the world as much as Tara. The fact she was this devoted to her mom, despite the personal risk, said everything he needed to know about her character.

Tara couldn’t get a break. Life hit some people harder than others. He was beginning to see and understand that now.

Same with his mother?

Jackie had certainly gotten the short end of the stick when it came to her parents. The very people who should have loved and protected her were the ones who let an uncle take advantage of her. Granted, they didn’t know it was happening. In fact, according to what he’d been told, they couldn’t believe it was true. But nothing good had ever come from sticking someone’s face in the sand instead of dealing with an issue straight on once they were told. Would his mother have turned out differently if she’d faced her demons rather than allowed them to take the wheel?

Was he being too hard on her?

Life dealt a bad hand to some people. It broke some people. Tara should be broken. And yet, here she was still fighting.

“Do I, Rowan?” Tara asked, breaking through his heavy thoughts. “Does anyone deserve anything in this life? Maybe none of us are entitled to a thing. Maybe life wasn’t meant to bend to our will. Maybe, it’s up to us to learn and grow from every experience.”

Those words resonated. They made a whole lot of sense. And he was beginning to think he was the jerk when it came to his mother. Maybe it was his job to at least try to understand what she’d been through and why she’d turned out the way she was. Her life had been hell on wheels. He could only imagine the abuse she’d suffered. He’d experienced something different, neglect. On balance, it was a whole lot better than what his mother had endured. If he and his brothers had been informed about their mother’s background, everyone could have been a lot more understanding and forgiving. Their relationships would be different, better. At the very least, they would have been able to offer more compassion when it came to her quirks and the way she dealt with the world.

But then, that would mean handling affairs in a mature, adult manner, which was something his father had never been taught to do. Did the environment in which a person was raised determine how they would deal with life in the future? Did it determine their personality? Or the way they would look at life? Treat others?

Coming from a family of nine boys with a variety of personality types, Rowan didn’t buy into someone being pigeonholed from birth based on how they were treated. He could, however, admit their childhood left them all with trust issues. Some to a bigger degree than others. Their upbringing taught them not to believe in others but to rely on themselves.
